Pricing Pattern of Himachal’s Apples in India, 1979, by R. Swarup and R. N. Tewari

Abstract: Apple is the most popular temperate fruit grown in this State which occupies about 55% of the total area under all fruits in the State. Area under apple in Himachal Pradesh almost doubled during the last one decade and thus apple has gained still greater economic importance in the State. Therefore it becomes an interesting topic to study the pricing pattern of apple in various markets. Thus this study confined only to purposely selected 8 markets of India namely, Amritsar, Bangalore, Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Madras. In each market, an Investigator was pointed to record the daily price for three grades of four commercial varieties of apples. This study relates to 1975-76 apple season. With this background it was observed that average wholesale prices vary as per the grades of apple. In case of Royal Delicious the large size of apple patch highest prices in Bangalore market (Rs.68 per standard box) followed by Madras. In case of medium size of grade the annual average price varied between Rs.39.57 to Rs.67.48 per standard box in all the markets. Regarding small size of grade the annual average price varied between Rs.55.08 to Rs.30.20 per standard box in different markets whereas, small size of grade the price varied between Rs.55.08 to Rs.30.20 per standard box in different markets. Regarding Red Delicious and Golden Delicious are also popular variety but not as much as Royal Delicious and rich-a-red. The detail of price pattern of these varieties summarized in below mentioned paragraphs.
