A Comprehensive Study on the Marketing of Apples of Himachal Pradesh in India VOL. II A: ANALYSIS OF PRICES (DELHI MARKET), 1977, by R.N. Tewari, R. Swarup and R. P. S. Malik
Abstract: Apple being a perishable and seasonally produced commodity, the wide fluctuation in its day-to-day prices is a normal phenomenon. Since the fruit cannot be stored for long, except in cold stores, it is transported to the various consuming and/or distributing markets almost immediately after harvesting. The prices of apple in a market will depend on a large number of factors such as supply, demand, availability and prices of substitute fruit etc. Since these factors vary from day to day, the prices are bound to fluctuate. A large number of apple varieties are cultivated in India. However, only a few varieties account for a significantly large proportion of the total production. Red Delicious, Royal Delicious, Golden Delicious and Rich-a-Red are such four varieties from Himachal Pradesh and Maharaji and Delicious from Kashmir which contribute a major proportion of total production of these two premier apple producing States. Thus for the present study above named four varieties of Himachal and two of Kashmir have been studied. The peak supply period of apple from Himachal is August – September while that of Kashmir October – November at Azadpur market of Delhi because this is the main apple markets of India. The detail of the marketing of these two varieties is discussed below.
