A Tribal Village of Himachal:Socio-Economic Study of Kothi, 1980, by R. Swarup
Abstract: In the series of village studies, the village Kothi in Kinnaur districts of Himachal Pradesh was taken for in-depth socio-economic survey Kothi which is a fairly big village according to the local norms and is located in the most difficult and back ward region of the state. The village Kothi is situated in the Sutlej valley of Kinnaur district it is located at a distance of about 3 km. from Kalpa and almost equal distance from river Sutlej. The entire population comprises of 148 household with a population of 1102 persons. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for a large majority of the people in the village. The farming conditions are entirely different from other part of the country. The farmers has to fight against vary heavy odds. The total area of the village is 233 hectares which does not include the forest area of the village. Nearly 94 percent of the gross cropped area is accounted for by food grain crops. The entire area is most suitable for the production of off-season vegetables during summer, but the high cost of transportation is the limiting factor in their adoption. The climate of the area is vary suitable for the growth of dry fruits as well as temperate fruits. Sheep and goats are the important livestock claiming 68 and 12 percent share respectively in the total live stock of the village.
